Making stories

We had many reasons for dragging our family around the world.  One of the biggies was wanting to create memories that would become part of our family story.  I realise that only people with loose screws would bother to traipse to Northern Australia in the rainy season for this purpose, we have plenty of rain here in London, and could just as easily got wet on Clapham Common and bonded over our shared experience.

Except.

There was something very special about our camping trip in Litchfield National Park near Darwin.  We had an entire national park just to ourselves.  Imagine that.  Acres and acres of spear grass and wallabies and dark rusty red earth, just for us.  We fell asleep to the sound of rain drumming on canvas and dingoes howling.  We swam in streams fed by thundering waterfalls and watched giant lizards hunting for bugs.  We cooked beer bread on the barbie and didn’t change out of our togs for four days.  It was magical.  A real do-you-remember-when?

I got all lyrical about the Aussie rainy season on my other blog.  If you want to see more pictures of Litchfield, they’re here.

One day your kids will grow up and actually say those words “do you remember when” and they’ll say it to someone who will reply ‘hell, you’re parents were SO COOL’. Worth it for that alone I should think?

I’m pretty sure they’ll be as embarrassed by us as all children are by their parents.

  2. I so admire you for being able to do this with the children, you made life long memories for them
